Proposal
By: Laurice Skinner
Introduction
The objective of this proposal for creating standard set expectations in different types of high schools is to assist Chicago Public Schools administration in providing equal support for all CPS students and equal standards for all students.
The standardized expectation in various types of Chicago’s Public High schools is designed to provide support for all students enrolled in Chicago Public Schools despite the type of high school they are enrolled in as well as their economic background.
This is essential to establishing an organized system in Chicago Public Schools that provides the emotional support for all students to succeed, this will allow Chicago Public Schools to attain higher graduation rates and leave students better prepared for post-secondary education.
Background
Research from the Post-secondary project has shown that students from a low economic status are less likely to go on to achieve post-secondary education. Many of these students are the ones that are enrolled in local high schools. We have found that in these local high schools the student expectations are significantly lowered compared to the expectations of a student in a selective enrollment high school.
The administration of Chicago Public Schools has established some schools for the purpose of the students reaching post-secondary education and some to prepare students for a job. The local high schools are labeled as those for students to become a member of the working class while the selective enrollment schools are seen as the schools for those who will succeed. This immediate distinction between the types of schools offers no emotional support for those who wish to succeed in lower performing high school.
To attempt to eliminate the stigma placed upon those who choose or are forced to go to local high schools there needs to be an equal expectation for all students enrolled in Chicago Public Schools. The establishment of an equal standard for the students of all high schools may lift the restrictions felt by the students emotionally.
